Emergency Prayer Treatment
The Nine-Hour Novena

The late Reverend Hypatia Hasbrouck created the nine-hour Novena, when she found herself in the middle of a dire emergency. Her only son was gravely ill with pneumonia and the doctors told her that his life or death would be determined within the next 24 hours. She was advised to pray. Hypatia was not particularly church oriented at the time, and the only prayer practice she could remember, beside saying grace before a meal, was a nine-day Novena, something she had practiced with a Catholic girl friend once when she was a child. She didn’t have nine days, but somehow she knew that God was not limited by time so she shortened the practice, as she could remember it, to a nine hour novena and made up her own prayer to go with it. Seven hours later, her son’s fever broke and he survived the pneumonia.

For your nine-hour novena, you will want to select a time period that will be as convenient for you as possible. Nine AM to Six PM suits most people. Then begin this way.

At the start of the first hour say:

“Jesus said, ‘Ask and it will be given to you, Seek and you will find, Knock and it will be opened to you. ’God, I ask, I seek and I knock and I know that you are working to bring about the desire of my heart.”

State your prayer“I am asking God, for _______________
(Ex: for harmony in my relationship with Mary.)”

State your intention - “I intend from this moment on _______________
(Ex: that my relationship with Mary will be completely harmonious and a joy for both of us.)”

Express you gratefulness - “Thank you God, that you hear me always and provide for my every need.”

At the beginning of each hour, for the next seven hours – repeat that prayer exactly.

If the matter comes up for you between prayer times, say:
“I am grateful for peace of mind as I pray”.

At the start of the ninth hour, again repeat your hourly prayer – followed by this statement:

“I have placed this matter lovingly in the hands of God.
God is in charge and all is well.”

The nine-hour novena will serve as a wonderful prayer tool for you to use for the rest of your life and is especially comforting in any kind of emergency. Your novena is appropriate for your own desires or for your desire for others. It works especially quickly for sick or injured children or animals because they are so open to allowing God to do God’s work in them.

Should you need to start your novena late in any day – it is essential that you set an alarm clock to wake yourself up to say your hourly prayer. A kitchen timer, set for 60 minutes is helpful for this exercise no matter what time of day you begin your practice.
